Housekeeping at A Modern Meal Maker

It’s been four months of blogging so far at MMM, and I though it was high time I took a broom to the workroom floor and straightened up. As I was tidying, I worked on making the site easier for you, the reader, to navigate.

For starters, I wanted to introduce my reoccurring blog topics. They’ve been there all along, but they’ve been more loosely defined than I’d like them to be. To make them work better as actual topics, I’ve  cut back on how many posts are included under more than one topic to avoid becoming repetitive. I have been warned that I have a habit of repeating myself. You understand. You understand?

With that, here are MMM’s freshly scrubbed topics, explained. They always can be found, neatly folded, in the right-hand margin of the blog.

1. Chef Tricks. Chefs cook faster and more efficient than the rest of us—because they have to. Here, a few ideas taken from their expertise.

2. Cookbooks. These posts all have something to do with cookbooks: from recipes that come from cookbooks I like to experiences I’ve had during the whole cookbook creating process

3. Essentials. When cooking—or doing anything else for that matter—it’s helpful to have a foundation of  information. Following are posts dedicated to the fundamentals of a working kitchen.

4. Extra Bits. A catch-all bin for goodies, often narrative in nature, that don’t quite belong anywhere else. Think of this section as a jumble sale filled (on a good day) with hidden treasures.

5. Leftover Index. I have big hopes for the Leftover Index, but so far it’s been neglected. Essentially it is reserved for posts that grapple with useful ideas that emerge from fridge leftovers. Suggestions welcome.

6. Marketwatch. Any post that is inspired by a seasonal ingredient—zucchini just plucked from the yard, say, or a handful of turnips discovered in a CSA box—is grouped under this topic.

7. Meat Matters. Sourcing higher quality meat has become a growing concern for many people, present company included. Here are stories and commentary on the subject.

8. Recipes + Ideas. The posts on this page contain a recipe or a “recipette” — an idea that, while not as detailed as a recipe, can be just as useful for spurring inspiration.

9. Restaurants. I like restaurants. You probably like restaurants. While I’m not big on restaurant reviewing, I love to spot a good old-fashioned trend. That, and other distractions, is what these posts are about.

10. Travel.  Hitting the road stirs up culinary ideas more than just about anything else. These posts share the highlights.

11. Wine, Beer, Spirits. I’ve worked on two wine-centric books, but I also like learning about craft beer. Anything spirit- or cocktail-related is also fair ground.

Rarely do I find a food blog as organized as yours. I love it! It’s so easy to look up on topics you have here.
