About Kate
When you’re the only kid at the bus stop asking the other kids what they’re having for dinner, it’s pretty clear you have food on the brain.
That kid was me. My interest in food and writing has led me from cooking on the line at restaurants such as Radius in Boston, Terra in St. Helena, California, and A16 in San Francisco, to a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern. I have been writing about food professionally since 2005.
These worlds came together in A16 Food + Wine, a Ten Speed cookbook published in 2008. Since then, I have pursued more cookbook projects. I also spent four years as an editor for Restaurants & Institutions. My work has appeared in Chicago Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, Fodor’s, Say Cheese, and Time Out Chicago. As a volunteer, I wrote Eat the World, a cookbook for kids, for Chicago’s Common Threads organization.

About the images: The banner on the site was designed by my taller sister, Maureen. It’s composed of a pile of parsnips she captured at a farmers market in Seattle. Some of the images on this site are hers, but for the simple stuff, which is most of it, that’s just me fiddling with a point + shoot or iPhone, fingers crossed, hoping for the best.
